What is Core Architecture Data Model?

– CADM or Core Architecture Data Model can be defined as a logical data model in the context of enterprise architecture.
– This logical data model is concerned with the information regarding the description and building of the architectures.
– CADM is counted among the common data base schema which are already defined in the US department of defense architecture frame work usually abbreviated as DoDAF.
– Its first publication came out in the year of 1997 in which it was portrayed as a logical data model for assisting architectural data.
– This data model has been exclusively designed for capturing the DoDAF architecture info into a structure that is standardized.
– Also, CADM was developed in support for the DoDAF data requirements.
– The relationships and entities for the architecture data elements of DoDAF are also defined by the core architecture data model.
– This allows for integrating across and within the descriptions of the architecture.
– Therefore, it is the manner in which the architecture info is exchanged among the various areas such as components, mission areas, federal as well as coalition partners.
– This in turn provides a standard way of implementing data inter-operability on the architectures.
– When one has to integrate architectures with DoDAF, the CADM works as a critical aspect in the integration process. – During this process, elements such as the semantics, data element definitions, data structures and so on are used for describing the architecture entities and objects.
– Common objects are faithfully related across several views if the underlying CADM is implemented.
– A common approach for the development of the architecture and its foundation is achieved by adhering to the frame work which involves conforming to the current CADM version.
– The use of the common data elements is ensured by conforming to the CADM itself.
– In the year of 1998 a revision was carried out to fulfill all the needs of the version 2.0.1 of the C4ISR architecture frame work.
– A conceptual view of the organization of the architecture was provided by the initial CADM being a logical data model.
– Since the evolution of the CADM in the year of 1998, it began providing a physical view consisting of the following elements:
1. Data types
2. Abbreviated physical names
3. Domain values

– All of these above mentioned elements are required for the implementation of the data base.
CADM, being a physical data model can be used for the automatic generation of the databases as well as data base designs.
– The DoD architecture frame work was initially released along with the CADM version 1.5 in the month of April 2007.
– The DoDAF version 1.5 followed up after the release of version 1.0.
– The experience of the DoD components reflected quite well in this version which was gained as a result of the development and usage of the architecture descriptions.
– The additional guidance was provided with the transitional version that reflected on net-centric concepts contained within descriptions of the architectures.
– In addition to this information regarding the federating of the architectures and data management is also included. – The CADM version 1.5 is known to be backward compatible with the previous versions of core architecture data model. – The constructs of the CADM can be used to express the data sets that were built in accordance with the CADM vocabulary.
